In the 115th Monocle, Janek Schmidt and Ramon Haindl describeone of the most popular and the worldwide representative tradition of the Bavarian people: the so called “Biergarten” (Beer gardens).
In 1593 a feud between the traditional breweries and the inhabitants of Munich brought to a regulation that banned the citizens from the breweries and forced them to drink outdoor. Since then, the Munich Beer Gardens continue to attract thousands of residents everyday, while hordes of tourists come to the city before and after the Oktoberfest. They sit around massive wooden tables, drinking beer and enjoying life under the shadow of the horse-chestnuts.
